Horyn/Rabkin assignment

  1. The company, Express, has been listening to Cathy Horyn. Express has started leaning more towards comfort and trying to be more affordable for customers rather than watching what is on fashion week and making an exact replica. We, as a society, have all taken a turn toward comfort and affordability in the past century and it is affecting many companies and their approach to fast fashion. Cathy Horyn even says in one article, “The desire to be comfortable is profound, shaping attitudes and markets.
  2. For our client of Express to change in the opposite direction, they would have to go back to their roots of following high fashion more closely without worrying about comfort and price. High fashion does not care about affordability or the comforts of everyday; it cares about making a big, bold, and powerful statement. Grunge is easy, comfortable, and affordable to recreate, which is why it is so popular right now. Express would have to get rid of its everyday cotton Ts and shift to a more upscale look.
  3. I think the most revolutionary thing for Express to do is to take the leap and go high fashion. Sometimes, the prices are high in Express and do not match the high lifestyle that can afford them. I believe that if we took a more fashion, “New York” look, we could expand the business and gain more customers that can afford to pay for the clothes and who want to be more fashion forward rather than just comfortable.

I think this is a very interesting article and brings up some very interesting points. I feel like in a time where people like to look at the art of fashion in so many different ways and aspects, it would be a great idea to bring back some fashion illustration in magazines. I think it would be a cool idea to maybe have one or two magazines that get rid of all the high tech photo-shoots and flashy sets and go back to the traditional illustration to let the fashion speak for itself. I do love fashion photography and it is so impressing to see the strives it has made, but sometimes it is nice to go back to a simpler time to see what the main topic actually is; fashion.
